Summary: Prior to the introduction into the hospital of plasma oestrogen estimations as a routine test in pregnancy, oestrogens were estimated simultaneously in urine and plasma in all inpatients and in a random selection of outpatients for a trial period. A total of 524 estimations were performed on 382 patients. The urine and plasma results were correlated with each other and with length of gestation, clinical disorders and birth weight in order to evaluate the suitability of plasma oestrogen estimations as a routine feto‐placental function test to replace 24‐hour urinary oestrogen excretion.
