Abstract

The issue of supercooled large droplets related to aircraft icing is reported very often due to its relation to safety. To simulate the impingement behavior of large droplets, a twodimensional Navier-Stokes code which accounts for compressibility effects is used to determine the flow field around a test model in this study. Also, an Eulerian-based shallow water droplet model including a semi-empirical approach for the droplet-wall interaction process and droplet break-up was developed. In particular, the droplet-wall interactions describing the splashing and rebound phenomena are dealt with as boundary conditions for the numerical simulation of the shallow water droplet model in supercooled large droplet conditions. Finally, numerical tests in comparison with the experimental data and LEWICE results are conducted.
