Optical power transmission changes of 10–20 dB have been experimentally demonstrated by varying the temperature of a tapered monomode optical fiber that is fixed to a glass plate by two drops of adhesive. The effect arises from different expansion coefficients of the glass substrate and the silica fiber. This induces microbendings in the tapered region. The temperature range of the sensor may be adjusted from 2 to 100°C, depending on the taper length and width. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
