A vertical one‐dimensional model is proposed to describe the vertical mixing in the central portion of the central basin of Lake Erie in summer. The model explicitly describes the various mechanisms which operate in the well mixed upper and bottom layers. The model predictions are in good agreement with the observed thermal structure over the entire water column during a month‐long simulation period.
