Abstract A study has been made of the polymerization of acetylene, propyne, and butyne‐1 using aluminum triisobutyl, n ‐butyllithium, or zinc diethyl in combination with titanium tetrachloride as catalyst. Optimum conditions for polymerization were determined by varying the catalyst composition. The major product was a black insoluble polymer whose spectrum indicates a high degree of conjugation. A small quantity of soluble low molecular weight polymer was also obtained. Reactions were run at atmospheric pressure and 21–62°C.
