Abstract Many optimum reactor combination schemes have been proposed for fermentation (autocatalytic) reaction systems. Usually these consist of series of stirred tanks or plug flow vessels. The basis for choosing an optimal scheme is here presented and it is found that for many cases of interest the combination of stirred tank ‐ plug flow is the best.
