Abstract

Cooperative learning during the past decade has been a popular educational approach with many middle and secondary educators and learners. It provides a viable alternative to traditional lectures, ability grouping, and competition among students. Learners appreciate the increased academic achievement and social interaction that come from working cooperatively toward common learning goals. Furthermore, research indicates that cooperative learning contributes to improved intergroup and interpersonal relationships in multicultural situations and promotes culturally diverse learners' self-esteem and academic achievement. This paper examines cooperative learning's contributions in multicultural situations and suggests ways that middle and secondary educators can use cooperative learning to reap these benefits.
