P atients with diabetes have increasedrisk of developing atheroscleroticdiseases (1). In type 1 diabetes, vas-cular complications are more frequently identified after the 5th year of the disease. Ultrasound assessment of endothelial function is a noninvasive method for de-tecting early structural and functional atherosclerotic process in the arterial wall. Impaired flow-mediated dilatation (FMD), an early marker of atherosclero-sis, has been detected in children with family hypercholesterolemia (2) and dia-betes (3). This study assessed the pres-ence of endothelial dysfunction in children with type 1 diabetes and 5 years duration of the disease.
