Abstract

A simplified model is considered for the prediction of tension ratio and torque generation. The extent to which variation in the angle of attack over a disc surface influences the results is discussed, and reasons are advanced for the torque generated being less than that predicted by the model. These include the influence of yarn-bending hysteresis and the effects of falling yarn-twist level through the spindle. An empirical method is suggested for correcting the predicted torque. The model predictions are then compared with experimental observations for changes in (a) speed ratio (D/Y), (b) machine draw ratio, and (c) disc centre-spacing.
