A simple analytic expression for the critical feedback level, above which a semiconductor laser becomes unstable, is derived. This tolerable feedback level increases with increasing damping of the relaxation oscillations. Good agreement is found between the analytic expression and numerical evaluations of the rate equations.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">></ETX>
