Abstract

The operation called “interpretation” has long been considered one of the central tools of causal analysis in survey research. It is suggested that interpretation can be effected by using the method of standardization, a method which has a long tradition in demographic and public health research. A simplified procedure for standardization, which makes it more easily adaptable to survey research problems, is presented.
