Abstract

The Rayleigh ratios and polarization ratios of some liquids are calculated from physical constants. If the molecules are nonpolar and have axial symmetry, the effect of the orientational correlations can be evaluated from Kerr constants. It was found necessary to consider the pressure dependence of Lorentz—Lorenz functions in the theory of light scattering and the Kerr effect of liquids. Theoretical and experimental data are compared and discussed.
