The growth, spectroscopy, and lasing of titanium-doped sapphire are discussed. Particular attention is given to the problems of achieving high-quality laser material and to the identification and elimination of defects that currently limit Ti:Al <inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</inf> O <inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">3</inf> laser performance.
