In this paper a multivariable control of a four-quadrant converter (4 qc) of a typical 16.7-Hz-railway applications is derived in detail. Besides the DC-link voltage, this control strategy includes the obligatory resonant circuit connected in parallel to the DC-link capacitor. On the one hand the control of a 4 qc of a traction railway vehicle has to provide a constant DC-link voltage, on the other hand nonactive power has to be minimised and grid stability has to be maintained. Excellent operation of the derived multivariable control is verified by measurement results, showing good steady-state and transient behaviour.
