The authors present an approach for reliability evaluation of interconnected power systems. In addition to the loss of load probability and expected unserved energy, the frequency of loss of load can also be computed efficiently. This approach can include the planned outages of generating units in a very efficient manner. The state space over all maintenance intervals and load states is considered simultaneously by using the concept of a reference load state and an equivalent composite generation model, and a decomposition-simulation procedure is performed on this state space. This allows the development of a very fast algorithm and efficient storage utilization. Sample studies are presented to show that this algorithm is as accurate as the previous one but many times faster.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">></ETX>
