We present a novel and simple method of producing small core silica holey fibres with nonlinearity close to the maximum achievable. An effective area of 1.6 mum <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</sup> with a loss of 0.18 dB/m at 1.55 mum were achieved.
