Relations between groups as actors are most often conducted through specialized representative roles. Action in each role is on behalf of the group that defines it and is seen as the action of the entire group. The functional implications of representative interaction for intergroup and intragroup relations are discussed for each of four types of intergroup situations, the types being based on the variables of power and legitimation.
