THIS paper sets out to define the role of health edu cation within an overall framework of health promo tion. A typology of health promotion is described, and the nature of health education's contribution is examined. It is concluded that direct social action and behavioural change, whilst valid strategies for health promotion, are not valid strategies for state sponsored health education. Finally, some basic prin ciples of practice for health education are suggested.
