Abstract The analysis of multi-temporal AVHRRGAC data over Africa reveals that the integration of thermal information with a vegetation index clearly increases biome discrimination at a continental scale. Multi-temporal series of the ratio between surface temperature and the normalised difference vegetation index have the greatest potential to yield a realistic land-cover classification.
