Bulky protectors: A one-pot reduction of tri(tert-butyl)cyclopropenyltribromosilane with potassium graphite yielded a unique lattice-framework disilene in 47 % yield (see scheme). The new polycyclic disilene is C2-symmetric and has a long SiSi double bond (2.26 Å). Its stability is attributed to the bulky substituents, which act as protecting groups.
