Shine a light! Columnar mesomorphic assembles of propeller-like hydrogen-bonded complexes show a chiral photoresponse upon irradiation with circularly polarized light (CPL) of a given handedness (see picture). The materials can behave as a supramolecular switch that undergoes helix inversion when irradiated with the oppositely polarized light.
