Low-dose darbepoetin treatment confers vascular and tissue protection that is associated with persistent stimulation of the pro-survival Akt signaling pathway. The use of recombinant human erythropoietin or analogues may have utility in preventing ischemia-related progressive vascular injury and organ failure.
