Reactive atmosphere processing with a NF <inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">3</inf> gas is employed in the preparation of fluoride glasses to remove hydroxides in the glasses. The hydroxides are effectively removed by NF <inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">3</inf> processing without any resultant increase in the scattering.
