This paper presents the design of a decentralized automatic generation control (AGC) scheme for interconnected multiarea power system. The proposed controller incorporates various types of transactions taking place in a competitive electricity market. The controller has been designed by appropriately assigning the eigenstructure of each isolated subsystem via state feedback, satisfying the sufficient conditions for stability. The functioning of the proposed decentralized controller has been demonstrated on a 39-bus New England system and a 75-bus Indian power system, and the results have been compared with those obtained by using a centralized control scheme. Compliance with the North American Electric Reliability Council standards for AGC has also been established.
