Summary Trypanosomosis remains a widespread constraint on animal production, human health and agricultural livelihoods in rural Africa. Methods of tsetse control are reviewed and recent developments in bait technology are highlighted as a cost-effective and environmentally benign means of increasing agricultural production and improving food security. It is concluded that the restricted application of insecticide to cattle to suppress and eliminate local tsetse populations should be promoted as one of the key, farmer-based, disease control measures to complement, or as an alternative to, the prevailing widespread use of trypanocides.
