This paper proposed a packet assembly mechanism and investigated its impact on the network performance under self-similar traffic. The simulation results have demonstrated that this mechanism can serve as a traffic shaper to reduce the network-wide packet-loss rate efficiently. By incorporating the contention resolution schemes in wavelength, time, and space domains, traffic shaping leads to a several-fold benefit of performance improvement at the expense of relatively small increases in delay.
