A sliding mode variable structure control (SMVSC) based speed regulating strategy is introduced to Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine (PMSM) MTPA (Maximum Torque per Ampere) control system in order to improve the system robustness against parameter perturbations and external disturbances for electric vehicle motor drive system. Aiming at alleviating intrinsic chattering in the sliding mode control system, an improved variable exponent reaching law based sliding mode control method is proposed, and integral sliding surface and continuous switching function are adopted in speed loop. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the designed controller enhances system robustness and ensures good dynamic and static characteristics for electric vehicle motor drive system.
