Personal interviews were conducted with 400 elderly Anglo, Los Angeles County women to identify factors contributing to mother's satisfaction with filial relationships. Variables examined encompassed four major conceptual areas: (a) mother's background, (b) mother's role behaviors, (c) mother's contact with her children, and (d) children's filial behaviors and mother's filial expectations. Satisfaction with filial relationships was found to be related primarily to satisfaction with quality of contact with children and secondarily to children's potential filial behavior and mother's satisfaction with quantity of contact with children.
