Exclusive oxidation of the 3-position of a substituted cyclohexane ring was achieved through attachment of the substrate to a designed scaffold supporting a diamidomanganese complex (see scheme). The covalent tether, viewed as a mimic of noncovalent recognition forces, predisposed the methylene group at C3 in the proximity of the metal center. The simplicity of these models allows facile evaluation of novel metal complexes with regard to their ability to functionalize C−H bonds. P = protecting group.
