The U.S. Army's Engineer Research and Development Center - Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory is investigating the feasibility of seismic-based personnel detection in non-traditional applications. A detection algorithm specific to footstep- induced ground motion has been tested against field data representing pedestrian and vehicle movement. Detection ranges greater than those of commercial systems and discrimination against vehicle-induced ground motion have been realized. Details of the algorithm performance, progress in the development of a personnel detection system, tactics for its use in seismically cluttered environments, and deployment guidance for incorporating seismic personnel detection in security designs are presented.
