The first measurement of an elevated temperature of the target gas in a neutralizer cell, resulting from interaction with the beam, is reported. Effects unique to the beam–plasma system in the neutralizer are considered with particular reference to the relevance of the experimental spectroscopic analysis technique. The gas is found to reach temperatures up to 900 K for operation with multi-megawatt positive ion beams.
