The design of experiments for the identification of non-linear systems is discussed. In open-loop operation the optimum input for a completely unknown non-linear system is derived and practical rules to be followed in closed-loop operation are described. It is shown that the use of PRBS inputs to excite non-linear systems can cause loss of identinability. The results are illustrated by simulated examples.
