Abstract Conventional triple base propellants are currently used for high performance tank and field gun ammunition. The aim of the present study was to improve the chemical energy of the triple base propellant by partial replacement of picrite by RDX to achieve higher force constant ( F ) and lower specific heat ratio ( γ ). Details of theoretical and experimental studies carried out on six triple base propellant formulations are discussed in this paper. It can be concluded that partial replacement of picrite by RDX in the triple base propellant formulations achieved higher chemical energy as well as improved ballistic performance.
