Erosion data from solid cathodes so far have been interpreted in terms of efflux from cathode spots proper, and thus as indicative of spot properties. A study based on published data indicates that evaporation from the molten tracks created by the cathode spots must be taken into account in order to explain consistently the experimental observations.
