Abstract It was found that α-cyanovinylsulfones, which were prepared by an improved Knoevenagel condensation, react readily with 1,3-dioxolane under ultraviolet irradiation in the presence of a photosensitizer. The reaction provided a new convenient method for the preparation of 3,4-disubstituted pyrroles.
