Phosphors showing well-resolved bands in their emission spectra have been made by thermal treatment of alkali halides in the presence of oxygen. The emission spectra are strikingly similar with quite different halides all showing a wave number difference of about 1000 cm-1 between the peaks of the main components of the band system. The chlorides and bromides show abnormal thermoelectric effects. It is suggested that both the similarity in the emission spectra and the abnormal thermoelectric effects can be accounted for by the adsorption of O2+ on active sites.
