Abstract

A common perception is that workers in some kinds of jobs retire earlier than others. The evidence presented here confirms that retirement patterns differ by occupation and industry. Three explanations for these differences are considered: job satisfaction, workplace injury or illness, and job productivity. Workers who retire earlier appear to do so for health and productivity reasons.
