We have reanalyzed elastic \ensuremath{\alpha} scattering data on many target nuclei from $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$ up to $^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$ over a wide range of energies. Using double-folded potentials we have obtained excellent agreement between the experimental scattering data and our optical model calculations. In addition, bound state properties have been calculated successfully. A systematic behavior of the energy and mass dependence of the strengths of the real and imaginary potentials has been found. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.
