Numerical calculations of shock waves in extended circumstellar envelopes, with radiation transport via photon diffusion, have been performed; they suggest a satisfactory explanation for the light curves of (at least) Type II supernovae. This model predicts the development of a severe Rayleigh-Taylor instability after peak light, and aiso predicts the presence of high- and low-density phases in the expanding matter.
