Abstract The Gorsky effect is investigated by internal friction measurements in the niobium‐hydrogen system at a vibration frequency of 16 Hz. The diffusion coefficient D of hydrogen in niobium is measured as a function of temperature. It is found that D , in the temperature range from ≈︁ 235 to ≈︁ 830 °K, obeys the Arrhenius relation D = D 0 exp [– W / kT ] with D 0 = 5.4 × 10 −4 cm 2 /s and W = (0.109 ± 0.005) eV. A deviation from the exponential law is observed at lower temperatures.
