Abstract

Abstract Recent resolving power measurements by Burtt & Catton give high values and demand the re-examination of insect vision theories. Their results can be explained by the formation of Fourier images of the Cowley & Moodie type. Integral images are unsuitable, but very sharp intermediate images have been discovered, which are satisfactory. A much-simplified explanation of Fourier images is given. The whole question is examined using partial coherence. An entirely new method of imaging a small monochromatic source is proposed and has been achieved. A general relationship between partial coherence and resolving power is stated.
