SUMMARY Of a consecutive series of 134 patients presenting in hospital with febrile convulsions, 102 were assessed psychologically between 8 years and 9 years 10 months after their initial fits. Although the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children showed the IQS of the group as a whole to have normal means and distributions, 8 per cent of the children had Full Scale IQS of less than 70. Social class and persisting neurological abnormality were important predictors of psychological functioning in both boys and girls. There is much evidence to suggest that intellectual attainments in boys may not be grossly affected by repeated fits. The boys with IQS of less than 70 had all been developmentally slow prior to their first fits, and no other specific characteristics were identifiably associated with scores of less than 85. In contrast, girls appear liable to suffer damage from the convulsive process itself, especially those whose initial fits were unilateral. The girls who had had unilateral fits had high error scores on the Bender Visual Motor Gestalt tests. Quotients of less than 85 on the Verbal, Performance of Full Scale Wechsler tests were found in girls from the manual social‐classes with perinatal or neurological abnormalities, those with initial right‐sided fits, those who had had unilateral initial fits with subsequent febrile recurrences, and those who were still having afebrile seizures at the time of review.
