Two papers (I and II) are published jointly on the experimental determination of Raman intensities and calculations of intensity parameters of stretch-oriented polyethylene and perdeuteropolyethylene in different scattering geometries and polarization directions. In Paper I the reasons of the work, the basic principles of the method and the experimental techniques are described and the integrated relative Raman intensities are reported. A comparison of the data in various geometries allows to judge the validity of the experimental data. The vibrational assignment based on experiments is verified as a background for the calculations of intensities which follow in Paper II.
