Experimental results from measurements of the number of levels in the 1-0 to 4-0 vibrational bands of molecular hydrogen are reported. The observations were made with the Kitt Peak solar Fourier transform spectrometer in conjunction with a 6 m base length White cell. Filters with 3-6 A bandwidths were employed for the 3-0 and 4-0 lines, while blocking filters were used for the 1-0 and 2-0 lines. A Galatry (1961) function was fitted to the lines to ascertain their strengths and centers. Results are provided for the frequencies of observed transitions at 2.8 atm and 296 K, for the 1-0 and 2-0 pressure shifts, and for rotational constants. New ground-state rotational constants were defined, including B at 59.33451/cm, D at 0.04561/cm, and H at 0.0000456/cm, which are noted to produce significant changes in previously calculated high J lines.
