The use of 38 Cl tracer methods is described in measurements of (a) the partition coefficients of a number of chlorinated and fluorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons in the olive oil/gas and serum/gas systems, (b) the rate of absorption of the same compounds from alveolar air during breath holding and (c) the retention of the same compounds following single breath administration. The importance of lipid solubility in determining the relative toxicity of this range of compounds is discussed.
