Abstract An analytical procedure was developed for the determination of urinary manganese by atomic absorption spectrometry. Manganese is extracted from a buffered solution of the ashed urine salts by complexing the metal with 8-hydroxyquino-line and extracting with MIBK-CHCl3. The extract is then treated with acid, and the acid solution is aspirated into the instrument for the determination of microgram quantities of manganese. The accuracy and precision of the analytical technique were evaluated by comparison with data obtained on identical samples by means of spectrographic analysis.
