The two systems $c(2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}2)\mathrm{O}/\mathrm{Cu}(001)$ and $(\sqrt{2}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}2\sqrt{2})R45\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}$ O/Cu(001) have been studied by normal photoelectron diffraction (NPD), with the use of $\mathrm{O}(1s)$ line. In the $c(2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}2)$ structure oxygen occupies the fourfold hollow site, with ${d}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}=0.80(5)$ \AA{}. The $\sqrt{2}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}2\sqrt{2}$ structure has a similar NPD curve, indicating the same local site geometry for the $c(2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}2)$ sublattice.
