A simple and fast criterion for determining the number of exponentially damped sinusoids in the matrix pencil method is presented by calculating the reduction rate of the singular values of signal matrix. Comparing with the conventional criteria, this new criterion is more convenient without considering the factor of signal-to-noise ratio, and ensures the high computational efficiency and accuracy, which has been verified. Since the sizes of numerical errors or noise of the time-domain response in the reverberation chamber (RC) are difficult to determine, this new criterion is suitable for the response in the RC. By using the matrix method with the new criterion, the temporal responses of electric field in the RC are well extrapolated according to the early response calculated by the finite-difference time-domain method, and so the simulation time is dramatically reduced. Fast and efficient analysis of the RC can be realized.
