We have experimentally determined the population of vibrationally excited hydrogen molecules with vibrational quantum number ν'' up to 5 in a discharge, using resonant multiphoton ionization. These measurements present the first experimental evidence of the predicted plateau in the population of the higher vibrational levels in such discharges.
