Rheological properties of cement mixes: III. The effects of mixing procedures on viscometric properties of mixes containing superplasticizers

Abstract

The effects of mixing procedures upon rheological properties of cement mixes with and without superplasticizing admixtures have been investigated. The results are discussed in terms of the dispersion of structures. The effects upon yielding stress, plastic viscosity and hysteresis were studied by a co-axial viscometer. In the absence of admixture, yielding stress and plastic viscosity decreased substantially with increasing intensity of mixing, which caused a breakdown of particulate aggregates. However, with admixture present, the rheological properties of already well-dispersed mixes did not change much with increasingly intense mixing. Les effets des méthodes de mixage sur les propriétés rhéologiques de ciments avec ou sans ajouts superplastifiants ont été etudiés. Les résultats sont interprétés à partir de la dispersion des structures. Les effets sur la résitance, la viscosité plastique et l'hystérésis ont été étudies à l'aide d'un viscosimétre coaxial. Lorsqu'il n'y a pas d'ajout, la résistance et la viscosité plastique diminuent notablement lorsque le mixage est intensifié, provoquant le bris des aggrégats. Toutefois, lorsque des ajouts sont faits, les propriétés rhéologiques de mixtures déjà bien dispersées ne changent pas lorque le mixage est intensifié.
